MoodTools is an app for all mobile devices that was created to help users manage common symptoms of depression. Designed for individuals struggling with clinical (i.e. moderate-severe) depression, the app provides six tools based on principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to improve users’ mood and functioning: 1) information to educate users about depression (including access to internet resources); 2) videos on a variety of topics that can help with low mood (such as guided meditation or inspirational talks); 3) a Thought Diary to guide users observe and change problematic thinking patterns; 4) an activities log with suggestions for invigorating behaviors and the ability to track how much they help; 5) an electronic version of the widely-used PHQ-9 test to help users track their moods; and 6) a safety planner that lets users store a set of resources should they find themselves in crisis. MoodTools can be used as a stand-alone program or as part of treatment with a doctor or other mental health provider, and may be particularly useful for users who do not have access to more traditional mental health treatments.
