MoodCalmer is a web-based program created to provide a brief, self-guided intervention for depression. Designed in collaboration with the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) – and intended primarily for individuals living in the UK – MoodCalmer is based on the principles of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and can be utilized by anyone with access to the internet. The program guides users through four 20-minute “sessions” covering basic information about depression, new coping skills, and long-term recovery planning. Users can complete each session at their own pace, and can customize the time between sessions to ensure ample time for practicing the material. However, users will need to print worksheets from time to time in order to gain full use of the program. MoodCalmer also includes several widely used symptom checklists so that users can track progress and better understand their illness. Able to be used as part of a more traditional treatment for depression (e.g. psychotherapy) or fully self-guided by the user, MoodCalmer is a flexible tool that may help address mild-moderate forms of depression.
